Satellites Today in Business

By Editor | May 18, 2009

Virtually everyone in the world today, either directly or indirectly, uses satellites. They so extensively embed satellites in today’s global technology culture that it is difficult to find someone not affected. However, the impact of satellites is not intuitively obvious to the average person.

Why?

For one thing, satellites are not visible. A person making a phone call does not think about the path his call takes to get to the distant end, nor does he particularly care as long as the call gets through.

Secondly, the cost of operating a satellite is spread over many customers so no one seems to have any claim or responsibility over it. And finally, the design, launch and operation of a satellite are well beyond the means and knowledge of all but the largest and most well financed institutions and governmental agencies. The fact remains that in order to support business, satellites must be used and understood, in order to take full advantage of their unique capabilities.
