Satellite Communications Jobs – Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer

By Editor | November 15, 2007

There are several careers available for satellite communications jobs in the satellite communications industry. However, most satellite communications jobs require extensive education. Most satellite communications jobs require engineering degrees and some at the Masters level. We have list a few satellite communications jobs below along with their descriptions, expected salary, experience level required and education requirements. Keep in mind that the salary, education requirements, experience and education levels are variable and depend on what the satellite communications jobs market is like when you are applying.

One satellite communications job is the Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer.  This satellite communications job or positions can be found in organizations such as NOAA or NASA. This particular satellite communications job is technically challenging and requires the position to perform Satellite Constellation Availability/Reliability Simulation (SCARS) analysis of existing specifications for reliability and latency of data. A person holding this position is also required to calculate margins available against level I & II requirements. This satellite communications job also requires that one develop program level requirements allocation document that delineates existing performance requirements for major elements within the systems including margin available. The Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer must also have knowledge of commercial hardware and software available along with the capabilities of this hardware and software. Finally one must have a thorough understanding of the satellite communications ground process.

The expected salary for this satellite communications job, Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer, is typically between $65,000 and $90,000 and that will depend on the experience level and education of the candidate applying for the job.

Satellite communications jobs, especially those in engineering, require higher experience levels as well as higher education requirements than other communications fields. Most Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer positions require a minimum of four years experience and primarily this is experience is typically in analysis of the system availability utilizing tools like SCARS. Scars uses satellite, instrument and launch vehicle reliability data, along with past and planned launch dates.  The Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer will typically conduct “what-if” training evolutions to gain more understanding of the impact created by programmatic decision that can create changes to the production and launch of satellites.  Typically this satellite communications job requires the Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer to also maintain the SCARS and remains operational and receives maintenance and upgrades when needed.

As stated, most satellite communications jobs require a degree from a college or university and most of the time it is a BS or higher in some type of computer science or engineering. The Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer typically requires a Bachelor of Science or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Science or Mathematics.  With that comes the requirement to communicate effectively and the Satellite Systems Analyst/Engineer must have excellent written and verbal communications skills required.

I am currently in the army and I am a 25S which is a satellite operator/maintainer. I have extensive training in single channel communication also (radios). Just wondering where I can find a job.

I would try with General Dynamics or Datapath since you are a 25S.

I am very interested in the Satellite communications Field. I am a retired SGT from the US Army. I was a satellite operator/maintainer/installer/instructor and have not forgotten any of the training and experiences I had.
I am wondering where I fit into the jobs for satellite technician today?
I have tried General Dynamics and several other compnaies and they all require security clearences which I don’t have.

    David,

When did you retire from the Army?

I am also a former 25S, ETS’d back in ’07. I went to school just to make myself a little more marketable. I’ve recently completed my schooling and now have a BS EET with a major in wireless communications. I tried applying for a job with Lockheed Martin. The job posting said SATCOM, so i figured I was a shoe in. Sadly, I was informed that they were seeking someone with more Navy SATCOM experience. I couldn’t believe it. Well if anyone knows of any companies in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, drop me a line, I could really use it.

To Josh Javier: Hampton Roads and the majority of the Mid-Atlantic region, you are going to see a leaning/preference for Naval Sat personnel. If you are interested in relocating, you could either look into the Broadcast industry or in the Norther Alabama region that tends to have a preference toward Army personnel.
