Last year, when my mom traveled alone to Israel, I realized I had never placed an international call, and had no idea how. All my communications abroad have been over e-mail and the Internet.

But my mother has no idea how to use e-mail and wouldn’t have much computer access even if she did. So if I wanted to check in with her, I’d need to learn how to call overseas. And I wanted to make sure she knew how to call home to the USA, too.

Lucky for both of us, it’s pretty easy once you know how, and where to look for the necessary codes. The pattern stays essentially the same, no matter where you are dialing.

First, look up the IDD, or International Dialing Digit, for the country you’re calling from. Use a site like countrycode.org to look it up. Since I was calling from the US, the IDD is 011.

Next, find the country code for the country you are calling to. The country code for Israel is 972.

Third, dial the city or area code for the city you are calling. Keep in mind that not all countries use city codes. City codes also change or are added frequently, so check online for the latest information. My mom’s hotel was in Jerusalem, so the Jerusalem city code is 2.

Finally, dial the local number you are trying to call.

It’s that easy. IDD + Country Code + City Code + Local Number.
