POTS Lines Decreasing-Wireless on The Rise
Posted by Joseph Brochin
A recent study showed that POTS (Plain Old Telephone) lines are decreasing in the home.
The study showed that this occured mostly within younger people and those that are in the lower end of the income spectrum.
With the increase in wireless technology are wired phones and Internet access like dial-up and DSL a thing of the past?

I have to think wireless technology will continue to take away market share from POTS. Then again the traditional phone companies see this, why do you think you see all the recent mergers and buyouts between companies that have been traditional pOTS providers and cellular carriers? They seen this a long time ago, thats why.
Now on the other hand, I would not kiss DSL or dial-up goodbye just yet. Most older people and those that only use the Internet for email find dial-up to be an affordable and viable solution. DSL has become more affordable thus most dialup users are moving to DSL as well, especially when their POTS provider wraps this into a package deal at a very discounted rate.
Wireless Internet access is still somewhat out of reach for what most consumers are willign to pay, but as the price drops, look for it to continualy and rapidly grab more market share. It will happen too.
DSL & Cable #3

Now, I would like to address cable access to the Internet.
During the last few years, the cable companies have focused upgrading its existing infrastructure in order to deploy high-speed Internet access and VOIP over cable for homes and businesses.
It has started to become a user-friendly household source of affordable broadband Internet access for millions of people.
Residential users are the consumers who receive the most benefit from this technology.

Due to the current inherent limitations of cable technology, it is not usually a viable solution for businesses.
These limitations include, but are not limited to the following:
Wiring (most businesses are not wired)
Congestion and delay (the more people using cable, the slower the service)
“shared” connectivity, security (your neighbors may be able to access your files),
Cable’s inability to support any type of web or email server.
Ultimately as cable grows in popularity small businesses will and are making the mistake of seeing cable as an alternative to DSL.
This is not the case and should be studied carefully and a business should seek the advice of an IT and Telecomm solutions provider and consultant.
