Shopping for Cell Phones, the Right Way
Posted by Joseph Brochin
Cell phones can provide the individual user, as well as business, many different features to include, but not limited to:
creating to-do lists
set reminders
use a calculator
send and receive e-mail
retrieve information from the Internet (weather, news, etc..)
send text message
integrate with other devices such as PDAs, GPSs, MP3 players
When shopping for cell phones one should consider the service plan, mode of operation, battery type, display, and functions included that we listed in the first paragraph, special features, size, and price.
Service plans for cell phones are the most important item that requires your scrutiny. If you decide you like a particular phone because it is popular, looks cool, or has all the “bells and whistles” you might find after purchasing it that your phone may be cool but your plan does not support what you need or your overpaying for service you do not use.

Battery type is another item to look for. Nickel Metal hydride (NiMH) and Lithium ion (Li-ion) are the two most used types of batteries found in cell phones. NiMH has a high capacity that allows for extended use and Li-ion batteries offer power in a lighter version but typically cost more. When comparing phones you should look at talk time and standby time. Look to see if the battery is removable or built-in and how long it takes the battery to recharge. All the fore mentioned items are important based on your needs and how you use your phone.
Mode of operation is very important if you travel a lot, which if you do we recommend a dual band phone. Cell phones come in analog or digital types. Analog phones currently have the most coverage across the U.S. (this will change in the coming years), but digital allows more features. Ask yourself (or Brochin.net), if you need PCS or just plan cellular. Where can you take your phone? This is best answered by the following we retrieved from howstuffworks.com:
The display is another feature that can be important to many users. Those that have poor eyesight may prefer a phone with a larger display, while others may be interested in using their phone in low light conditions requiring a back lit screen and dial pad.
Are you a “techie” that likes “bells and whistles”? Then additional features such as ring tones, games, address books, etc… may be other features you are looking for. Business users and travelers on business or recreation trips may be looking for compatibility with PDAs, GPSs, and other devices.

In today’s high traffic world we have come to learn that it is unsafe to drive without a hands free device. Some phones have proprietary plugs that require you to buy only their hands free devices, which typically end up costing more.
Size is another issue. Do you plan on carrying the phone in your pocket, purse, or stay in your car or home?
The last but not least is price . We offer a FREE comparison chart to allow you to compare various plans with each other based on your needs. Just e-mail us and we will send it to you. It does not make sense to pay more for a phone and not use all the features. There are many more features included in today’s cell phone and it is best if you talk with a consultant so they can help you determine your needs.
History of Cell Phones and Cellular Technology

Ok, “What the crap Joe? I thought you were going to talk about tools and devices used with cell phones.”
That was the plan everyone, but this last week I was slapped down with stuff that prevented me from putting together a good post that you deserve. Besides that lame excuse, I have had a few conversations since starting this little series on cell phones. These conversations usually lead to the questions about the history of cell phones and how cell phones work. So since I am such a lame terd this week I thought I would share a very short article written by Bart Samuri.
Please enojoy this real brief read. The history of cell phones and cellular technology is so much more in depth than this article exposes, but it is a good start for inquiring minds. Dont worry, we will get to the tools soon.

A Brief History of Cell Phones
By: Bart Samuri
The concept of the cell phone was created in the late 1940’s. Scientists concluded that with small cells with frequency reuse they could create such a thing as a mobile phone. The technology that existed at this time however meant that this was impossible. The Bell corporation is responsible for the concept of the mobile phone, but only for use in cars. The first inventor of a portable cell phone is considered to be Dr. Martin Cooper who made his first cell phone call in 1973. He made his call to his rivals at Bell who were closely competing with him to win the cellular technology race.
In 1977 the model cell phone was created and given to over 2000 trial costumers. Tests continued on cell phones throughout the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. In 1982 cell phones were finally approved for public use in the United States. The cell phone became in great demand among consumers and by 1987 the airways were filled with cell phone frequencies. Since the FCC refused to allow the cell phone industry have any more bandwidth, cell phone companies began expanding and improving their technology. Today, cell phones are found in virtually every household and many people could not imagine life without them. We now have phones that include gimmicks such as camera phones, phones that download music, video camera phones and text messaging. The cell phone services have come along way since the idea was thought of in 1947, and we have Dr. Martin Cooper and Joel Engel to thank.
